M, B & Toto (wp, dogs)

Certainly not as romantic

As dances with wolves

But I imagine

Being canines

They also have fleas

Lick their, um, you know

And sniff each other’s hindquarters

The other side of the ledger

Reflects coin of the emotional realm

I’ve had dogs who

Gently place their head on my shoulder

When I cry

Dogs attempting to speak English

Dogs who sleep in the crook of my legs

As I lie

In a cramped fetal position

During the deepest dark dreaming

I’ve had dogs who make me laugh

Who adore my awful strumming and singing

Who love me unconditionally

Well, okay, food is involved in that bargain

But that’s fair

Most of all, I’ve had dogs

Who daily mourn when

I grab my backpack

I’m heading out the door alone

So yeah

I sleep with dogs

No matter how they smell

And each one, in my heart

Forever will dwell…

  1. I’m a cat lover, and have slept with lord knows how many over the years. Like your dogs, they have showered me with love and affection and empathy. They have been more caring than a lot of people I’ve known.

    1. I once lived in a place that didn’t allow dogs so I got two cats and learned to love them. But I understand how you feel because I always missed having a dog. Wishing you a nice weekend, too!

    1. Thanks so much! I get what may seem “soppy” sometimes over my dogs 🙂 Yes, that’s me camping on the Brandywine River outside of Philly. Nearby was the Wyeth property and I got to see all their art in a free, home museum (including a version of the famous painting Christina’s World). Those are my sons with our raggedy Yorkie Toto. My three clowns ❤

  2. My husband got increasingly aggravated at me for putting our dog in bed. I finally got her a dog bed for beside our bed and she loves it!! My husband read a study that said when dogs sleep in your bed you sleep worse but when they sleep in the same room you sleep better. I know mine used to wake me up when she kicks around!

    1. Hi Kaitlyn, first an apology! I just saw this (almost 2 months after you wrote the comment). I really love comments but see that I sometimes get overwhelmed and miss some of them. Anyway, love what you said about dogs in bed and beside the bed. I was only able to do this with a little Chihuahua and I think it was because she was too tiny to jump on the bed. I don’t know if my dogs are too old to be trained, but you have given me the “courage” to try again! Thanks!

    1. Thanks, JoAnna! Yes, the rare times I’ve been unable to live with a dog have been difficult. Conversely, I’ve put up with not-so-perfect conditions in order to have them with me ❤
