AMY WINEHOUSE EYES: BACK TO BLACK (Another Poem On Aging)

(Scroll down for YouTube video)

“Don’t wear dark eye makeup”

“Don’t dye your hair black”

Talking mouths and

Typing fingertips

Presume to tell the

So-called “elderly”

How to age gracefully

Who’s to say

If Amy lived

To turn sixty

That someday

The raven hair

And dramatic liner

Wouldn’t still be there?

This Boomer’s sick of advice…

BLACK & BLUE

One day I cried out

To the Cosmic Jester

“I’ll trade my brains for beauty!”

Shocked myself

Aging feminist that I am

Thought of women I admire

Thought of Amy Winehouse

Thought of Janis Joplin

Beautiful women

But imperfect

Amy, Janis, were you

Willing to sacrifice

Your talent for perfect beauty?

Is that why you left the world of

Mirrors

Objects merely reflecting

Surface light waves

Not truth

To your anguished eyes?

What beholder are we talking about

When we repeat the old aphorism?

Who truly sees our beauty?

Is it give me beauty or give me

Death

Depression

Drugs

Alcohol

Eating disorders…?
