TERRESTRIAL ZODIAC

The UK has Glastonbury Tor

The US has Mount Trashmore

I have been a Flatlander

Here in the Florida peninsula

But my backyard converts

To whatever I wish

And like conjurers of old

I see a Terrestrial Zodiac

On a two-lot land

An as below, so above plan

True, copying the stellar heavens

Is almost impossible to do

Yet I have special corridors of power

To do my bidding

Scaled down to twelve sections

Aries, my own, begins the wheel

Lies in the North

Red and green cayennes

Like the finest quartz Bloodstone

Soaking up the Sun

Clockwise to Taurus

Partially shaded by

Banana tree fronds

A solid, fighting weed

Inflorescence fruit womb

Gemini up against the back fence

Pure shade to hide the glow of

Duality and intelligence

Live Oaks dripping

Spanish Moss

With Air plants of Red Tillansia

Cancer conserving the foresty ponds of

Aquaplants like duckweed and algae

While Leo, basking in sunlight

Shows off the finest, most colorful

Swamp flowers

Haven for bees and hummingbirds

Now the serious vegetables take root

As Virgo’s analytical, critical

Earthy nature dominates under the palm tree

Libra has a patch of harmony

Growing this and that

But intense Scorpio

Hides the roots

Of onions, garlic and ginger

Under the water-based ground

And vibrant, reckless Sagittarius

Generously shines on Greens of every hue

As ambitious Capricorn

Close to the back of the house

Self-importantly impels the

Growing of corn and sunflowers

Sowed by birds and squirrels

Circle almost complete

As Aquarius

Not caring a bit

Who thinks what

Grows whatever blows its way

And inching closer to the beginning

Sensitive Pisces

Lets loose with exotic tropical flowers

Often not based in daily reality

But there, nevertheless

And so, I may never go

To see and feel the breathlessly beautiful

Tors and mounds sublime

But it is always

As above, so below

And I believe

In the great mystery

That if even one person

Out of one hundred

Lives life magically

It is a life worth living…

THAUMATURGY

Sliver of gold

Separated from the Sun

Found the sandy ground

Sparkling electrons

Sliver of silver

Melted from the Moon

Remained warm and bright

Every night

Snuggled beside her solar knight

Wading through weeds

Alchemist captured them

In his samovars

Of gold and silver

The perfect night for his

Heart’s creation

Manipulating matter

From Solid to Liquid

To Gas to Plasma

Poured into a cup

Sniffing the bouquet

Deeply drinking

The essence of her being

As she grew from the Earth

Showered by the Water

Breathing the Air and

Glowing from the Fire

Splitting from his body

Transformed into a

Philosopher’s stone

Shattering like a delicate bird’s egg

Emerging into the dark

Projecting her daylight

Her moonlight

Capturing him

And enchanted,

He acquiesced,

For Love sees no matter

In chains…

DARK RETURN

You came into my life

Last year

April to May

Then you were gone

After Mother’s Day

Now like an annual

Birthday gift

You appeared

Miraculously

Dark dove

Flying out of

A tall top hat

Landing on my

Salient breasts

Gently pecking at my

Lonely lips

Spreading your feathers

Chanting your spell

While my eyes seek

The magic wand

To combine you

With the shadowy man

But the month flies

And you follow

Again

On Mother’s Day

Gone

Flown away

You never stay

And I wonder

Are you a resurrection deity

Ruling the kingdom of my heart

For one short month

Go away

Do not stay

Above all, do not return

My fiery body

Can no longer withstand

The burning mystery of you…

ARCANA

Never use these words, says Gran

Only in dire emergency

She says in the Romani chib:

“Open the door to Arcana”

In my dazed state

The word eludes me

English tangles with

Two family dialects

Kalderash and Sinte

So I come up with Piro Hudar Arcane

Will have to do

I walk to the edge of the fog

Gran said, Doesn’t matter what country or town

The fog is yours

Three times turn

What’s your favorite number?

Four

Shtar

Chant shtar times for protection

Her voice fades

Early, early in morning

Galbi—gold—in ears and wrists

Step over the vaporous border

Turning, holding

Bal, mutra, shungar, rat

Lock of my still long silver crown

Secret fluids contained inside

Blood of my ancestors

All long ago died

Am I wasting this one chance

Do I really need help

Gran’s voice again

Call help, look up

And listen

See who comes

Here is a coin

Keep it forever

Bring it into the fire

Of the ending of one

Beginning of the next

When do I need help

Who do I call

You will know, said Gran

No, so overwhelmed

Do I use for love or money?

Do I use for health or happiness?

You will know

This misty morning

I think I know

I think I need to not save it

But the doubt

Stuff Gran never explained

Me wondering if half of it

Was made-up shit

To scare, impress

An autistic granddaughter

Whose only power

Was make believe

Falling back on my

Four familiar friends

Phu, Paj, Haburo, Rat

Earth, Water, Air, Fire

How can it be

Do I truly see

Or is it senility

Through the haze appears

A crow-faced man

Holding a stringed instrument

Courier and a harp

Anagrammed

Open the door to arcana

You summoned me

Said he

My honesty wins

I don’t know why I’m here

I don’t know what to do

I do

Let me do the rest

I know

I know all

Misty morning wrapping me

Like the finest silken shawl

I take a deep breath

Close my eyes

See images unknown

To modern tech screens

Hear music unheard

On hides, ivory or fine animal strings

Smell powerful spices

Swirling around my face

Taste prehistoric water

In a state of unbelievable grace

Feeling, feeling

What’s been missing

What has hidden from me

My chaotic decades

Now moving out of the mist

How important was it all?

Asks he

Do you see?

Why did I wait so long to know

How different life could go

Only you have the power of you…

EF-EL WOMAN WRITES

*scroll down for LA Woman youtube video*

I still get chills

Listening to Jim Morrison

Seemingly singing to a lonely woman

But really confirming his identity

To a cold and frightening universe

Chanting the anagram of his name

Mr. Mojo Rising

How envious I am

That his name was so magical

His poetry perfection

His voice

His music

His knowledge

Touching the souls

Of confused and frightened teens

Way back while our friends

Disappeared into the door

Of the war

And we took up his chant

Bopping our heads in cars

Or while grasping our new

Transistor radios in bed

Ear plugs connecting us

As we mouthed the words

So our parents wouldn’t hear

And forbid us to listen, through fear

As we sang Jim’s incantation

To the stars…

TWO POEMS (Happy Horror Week Scare: I’ll take ghosts, vampires, zombies anytime. Aging is my personal nightmare…)

CASH-POOR/CAN’T AFFORD YOUTH CULTURE ANYMORE

Nightmares about Soylent Green

Hungry? Worried about aging?

Thankfully, no Charlton Heston in the dream

Shopped at Walmart yesterday

Tomatoes spilled from inferior plastic tray

Some hit the floor but I’d already paid

Nothing grew in my back yard

Lost the planting will, everything’s hard

Sandy soil, anyway, is much too scarred

Food and water no longer seem healing

Garden medicine chest no longer appealing

Glancing in reflective glass, aged face has me reeling

Food, water, shelter and power

Supposed to create a protective tower

Framework for the body and soul bower

Poisoned is the water and food

Houses unaffordable yet devalued

Utilities effectuate disquietude

Ah, to be young and strong and ready to fight

To feel the blood pump while mood takes flight

But my side-effect of aging is terrible fright

Today is the future…

“WHAT DO WOMEN WANT?”

What do women want

According to medieval storytellers

“Sovereynte”

The ability to make her own decisions

I disagree

Women want beauty

The magic ticket to

Receive it all

When older,

Women want youth

AKA beauty

Let me prove

This to you

Disputing Chaucer and

His Wife of Bath Tale

Or, later, Sir Thomas Malory

And although Dame Ragnelle

Is given the honor of

“Knowing” what women want

The tale would be different

If an actual woman

Wrote the story:

So, you may remember that

King Arthur is chasing

(Poaching?)

A deer in haunted Inglewood Forest

Owned by the otherworldly

Sir Gromer Somer Joure

Who in anger, demands an answer

Within one year

(Or he will behead the king)

To the question:

What do women most desire?

Despairing, Arthur confides

In his nephew Sir Gawain

So the upbeat knight

Organizes a ride

Through the country

Asking women the question

But all the answers are different

(Okay, no women-change-their-minds-too-much jokes)

Desperate, Arthur returns to the forest

And meets a “loathly” lady

An ugly, old crone

Promising the answer

If he arranges for Gawain to wed her

Gawain agrees, to save his uncle

And Arthur finds Sir Gromer

Who is waiting with his sister

Lady Ragnelle, who happens to be

The “loathly” lady

She has quietly told him the answer is

“Sovereynte”

In bed, after wed

Gawain good-naturedly decides

To treat Ragnelle like a beautiful woman

Turning around

He sees she has transformed into a young

Stunning one

“You broke the spell

Cursed, to be old and ugly

Until a handsome young knight

Agreed to marry me”

But her looks will only be restored half the day

She gives him the choice:

Shall she be beautiful at night

When they are together

Or during the day

When they are with others?

Instead, Gawain gives her the sovereynté to make the choice herself

His answer lifts the curse for good

And Ragnelle’s beauty returns permanently

Beauty

Youth

Magical words

Why are there no real stories

About ugly, old men

Marrying beautiful, young women?

Well, ok, didn’t prove anything

Just another rant by an aging woman

Who happened to take a selfie

Facing the sun…

Um, hey, no knights

In my past or present

Can you lift the spell anyway?

P’HABENGI RAT (HALLOWEEN) #1

When that thin gossamer veil

Between the worlds

Shreds impatiently

To let the alive and dead

Have their meet-and-greet

Be careful what you wish

Be aware of what you say

Trust no spirit if they be unknown

Dump salt from a neck pouch if tingly scalp

Light white candles if black ones flicker and flare

Carve smiley orange kirbiso

And fish-feed your inky cats

Unless

Unless you crave

(If you are brave)

Excitement that may turn into

Fear

Because the spirits are bored

Powerful and jealous

And they may overcome

Whatever you believe

Who has the control?

Not us, my fellow-living

We can train, memorize, pray

But spirits have that spectral power

A necromantic way with words and wands

No, we’re no match

Unless

Unless you are blessed

With wisdom and purity

And you know the runes to

The banish spell

Do I know them?

Will I share?

Perhaps if you give me your candy corn

I can be persuaded to bare my soul to you…

JAKHALO (EVIL EYE)

(scroll down for Motorhead Evil Eye video)

Red garb

Red ribbon

Shields against

The envious eye

Modern knowledge

Preventative

Before giving in to

Ancient—but empirical—

Credulity:

What is the lunar cycle?

Waning moon

Causing low tidal ebbing

Also saps human energy

Affecting life’s outlook

Is it Mercury Retrograde?

Four times a year

Stuff happens

Titanic sunk

Loved ones succumb to illness

Computers and travel plans suffer

Numerology, specifically, what is your day of birth?

Certain numbers “demand” a more difficult life

Are you superstitious?

Know the facts

Do you worry about your nutrition?

Protein ingestion and blood sugar

Affect mental health

When all else fails, we seek an

Elemental curse banishment

(Based on an old Romani cure)

<sprinkle salt or grass or earth>

BAL—HAIR PROTECTS

Smother in sand

Smother in rock

Bury that curse

Good luck unlock

<splash water from a cup>

MUTRA-URINE PROTECTS

Wash away

Wash away

Wash away

Water drown the curse today

<burn sage or spicy incense>

SHUNGAR—SALIVA PROTECTS

Blow wind

Scattering all without a trace

Carry the curse

To an airless space

< “capture” sun’s reflection in a mirror or burn white candle>

RAT—BLOOD PROTECTS

Burning in fire

I watch the death

Of a heartless curse

Gasp its last breath

FOR ALL WHO BELIEVE IN CURSING REMEMBER:

CURSES RETURN!  NEVER CURSE OTHERS!

When one feels anger with another:

Sing, dance, meditate, cook, garden, drum on your lap

After a while you will suddenly know how to handle

The person, the situation, or your own reaction,,,

CONJURING SANITY

In lavender candle

Breathing in the color

Bathing in the light spectrum

Assigned the quality of wisdom

In lavender candle

Calming chaotic thoughts

Focusing on the lilac aroma

Arising from imaginary flowering fields

In lavender candle

Feeling faceted amethysts

Crystallizing my weary heart

Slowly giving way to intellectual realism

In lavender candle

Useless thoughts of you

And what could have been

Fade out into a purpling, evening sky…
