MAGNETISM OF THE UNIVERSE (4-7-17)

Virginids a week early

Or April’s Sigma Leonids?

Lift my eyes

To the skies

And there they explode

Into the darkness

Bits and pieces

Winding their way down

Into my net of stars

Floating atop my

Cauldron of warmth

Capturing the space debris

A gift for me

A wish

Whatever I fancy

Will appear within the year…

“SPIRITS ARE USING ME…”

REPOST UPON SEEING THE SOUTHERN CROSS AT MIDNIGHT 3-15-17

(scroll down for YouTube video)

Ancient museum piece

Finding its way

From saline, sunken galleon

To pristine, icy backdrop

Of the sky’s exhibit

Southern Cross

Crux!

Visible in the Northern Hemisphere

And all I can hear

Is Stephen Stills’ voice

Hitting those high notes

Thinking about how many times

I, too, have fallen

No thought of crucifixion

Redemption

Religion

Although a brief vision

Of the tarot’s Hanged Man

Sacrifice

Flashes through my exploding mind

Crux!

On April 8 at one in the morning

Florida, Hawaii and Texas

Are given the gift

From the Southern Hemisphere

Of their circumpolar Crux

Always above the horizon

The Earth poised just right

Stars gracing my life in the night

JUST ANOTHER HAIKU

(Been playing the tenor ukulele for so long that it is always a pleasant surprise to play the soprano and hear the difference in sound and feel the difference in mood.  Especially nice when snacking on Star Fruit and warming up with Star Anise in hot tea on a cold Florida day)

Soprano-sized uke

Voice soars above island skies

Singing with the stars

CANIS MAJOR & MINOR (THE NIGHT OF THE DOGS)

Tonight

Appearing in the

Northern Hemisphere

Canis Major

Greater Dog

Known as Sirius

The brightest star

Named for the Egyptian god Osiris

Ruler of life, death, fertility and plant rebirth

Also visible is

Canis Minor

Lesser Dog

Known as Procyon

Both stars

Halfway between Orion

And Earth

So wanting to be with

Us aching humans

Helplessly watching our dogs

Over the years

Trek to the skies

As we bid goodbye

It is not such a huge leap of imagination

To think that our best friends

Have come to reassure us

Sniffing, smiling

As only their species can do

A joyously unique

Modus vivendi

Telling us yes,

We are happy in a new life

As we light the way

For those who are

Lost

Lonely

Herding them back

Before they go astray

So let us remember our dogs

Today…

LIBRA VS SCORPIO

Okay, sorry, I love my Scorpio friends

But as an astrological dilettante

I discovered that an election date in November

Was convenient

Because the crops would be harvested

And winter storms would be mild

So Congress instituted the uniform date

In 1845

No offense to Scorpios

Those wonderfully mysterious

Water signs

But you know you can be

Stinging Scorpions or

Soaring Eagles

Quite a dual sign and time

To entrust the astrological vibrations

To an iffy pantomime of promises

Would the Founding Fathers

Have approved of the month?

It is said those wily Masons

Chose July 4th, under the sign of Cancer,

As the ideal day for the

Birth of the Nation

Computing positions of

Planets and stars

For maximum success

Another Water sign

Water, mutable

I, personally, would choose Libra

For an election month

An Air sign of logic

Seeking balance

Wouldn’t want to

Interfere with the harvesting

But does it really matter in modernity?

Hey, let’s add a new amendment

To the Constitution:

Change elections to be held

Between September 21 and October 21

The only ones harvesting are Big Farm

(Maybe Big Pharm is raking in the money, too, at that time)

Most of us are trying to stretch a dollar and

Find some fun in life

But I’d be willing to vote then

While we’re amending,

Let’s change the name of

CAMPAIGN contributions to

FOOD BANK AND MEDICAL ASSISTANCE contributions

Yeah, okay, do I get three wishes?

Let’s also outlaw war…

AN ARM AND A LEG

**scroll down for YouTube video**

Separated only by a belt

Japanese legendary war

Between the Taira family

As red as Betelgeuse

And the Minamoto family

As {blue-tinged} white as Rigel

Stars still battling

Orion’s belt

No-man’s land

A war

A constellation

A leg and an arm

Emblems of a mythos

Red and white

Like the Japanese flag

Symbolizing

Duty, sacrifice and loyalty

The Hunter a mighty sum

Of his parts

In the eternal aethers…

CORONA BOREALIS

Dionysus, the famous party boy,

Fell in love with

Ariadne, abandoned princess

She who aided Theseus

In his escape from the labyrinth

After murdering her father’s monster

The Minotaur who fed on the sacrificials

Ariadne agreed to help Theseus

If he would take her with him

Wanting to escape Crete

Mostly wanting to be

With her beloved hero

She trailblazed a path

Through the passages with thread

Theseus escaped, took her to an island

Then left her for dead

Dionysus found Ariadne

Immortalizing the princess

By flinging her crown into the aethers

Ptolemy, second century astronomer

Named the collection of seven stars Corona Borealis

Here stands a lonely poet

Not twenty minutes before a May midnight

In twenty-first century Florida

Gazing at the same crown of stars

While pondering how

Constellations

And faithless men

Are unchangeable over time…

DWARF STAR SOLECISM

Hydrogen, ionized oxygen

And dust

Hide a heart

Light-years from Earth

But in 1764

Charles Messier

Rescued it from oblivion

Dragging the first planetary nebula

Into the spotlight

Whether it wanted fame or not

Nicknamed “The Dumbbell”

No doubt due to its shape

It conjures up an alternate meaning

To overthinking English speakers

Who wonder if its heart is breaking

From an impulsive mistake

Made eons ago

In the starry ballroom of space

FIVE PLANETS AND A FULL HUNGER MOON (Blues Song for Ukulele)

Five planets and a full Hunger Moon

Merely a meaningless magical rune

Dangling above my sorrowful head

Making me wish I was dead

Dawn breaks in a Bluesy sky

Here I am, trying not to cry

Same as a Weeping Willow, rooted below

Heart cold and lost like an icy floe

Unlike the Moon, I do not hunger for food

Need a way out of my solitude

How might I cope with your desertion?

Why would I want to continue your coercion?

Five planets and a full Hunger Moon

Merely a meaningless magical rune

Retrograde planets add to your harsh words

Mercury and Jupiter whirling backwards

Venus, Saturn and also Mars

Add strife to the male-female spars

Love has become something ephemeral

Creating an atmosphere stifling and sterile

Like a nocturnal mammal I scurry around

Shivering on the muddy ground

Not sure what to do anymore

Bright Antares and Spica I ignore

Five planets and a Full Hunger Moon

Merely a meaningless magical rune
