WINTER SOLSTICE 2016

i.

How to survive this year’s end

Long Night Moon waning

Mercury Retrograding

My inner universe has been rocked

But not in the musical sense

Although holiday music sounds

So lovely on my new autoharp

My Cerberus—three dogs—

Hunkered down as if hearing

Harping from an ancient goddess

But O Holy Night is meant

For the ukulele that can sing

Powerfully, vibrato-ly

Chords claiming my soul

Constellations unchanging

They whisper in positivity

ii.

So no matter what we call

The world-wide holidays

Different religions celebrate

During the solstices

(summer in the southern hemisphere)

Our hearts resonate

To the melody of memory

Words may express our feelings

But rhythm captures our true essence

Spilling out in goodwill

Or perhaps sadness

iii.

Let us sing for those lost to us this year

But remember to sing for those found

As the Circle of the Year

Turning

As we do

Must keep us from fear

AUTOHARP

i.

Today

An early Winter Solstice present

Appeared in the mail

Autoharp

Allowing me to pretentiously play

Like I’m Janis Joplin

Talented and fey

Happily harping to my known ukulele chords

Singing into the perfect Florida morning

ii.

Neighbor’s rooster began crowing along

Smiling, I knew he enjoyed my song

Came down off my music high

Finally noticing that he never stopped

That rooster crowed from six to four

Silent by dawn, heard not anymore

iii.

Like some old Volva

Spouting dire predictions

In the Norse Edda

Perhaps tossing runic bones

I shivered in the pre-dawn light

Wondering what would occur by tonight

iv.

Remembering that Egdir plays the harp

While red Fjalar the rooster

Crows

Heralding Ragnarok

Events presaging

The fiery destruction

Yet bountiful rebirth

Of our troubled Earth

v.

Sometimes hard to be born a mystic

Symbols and sounds, so holistic

Today I play with heavy heart

Not sure what came first:

The rooster or the harp

Or were they merely

Synergistically

Reacting together…?

MY WORTHLESS HEART

(Scroll down for YouTube video)

Okay, I confess

I’m a lying, cheating bi**h

In my poems Unconsummated Guitar

And Take Me Back, Please?

I SWORE

I’d leave ukulele never more

But dang!

I love Janis Joplin

Will never have a voice like hers

But I’m haunted by her playing the

AUTOHARP

I wanna do it too!

I wanna look in my mirror and sing

Me and Bobby McGee

I do it with ukulele

But you know

Even though I’m old

(And maybe that’s the problem)

I can still have some dreams

Right?

So guess what I did?

Don’t guess

Went on Ebay

Yep…

Well, no, so EXPENSIVE!

Went to Amazon

Same thing

Hmmm, maybe I should reconsider this move?

Nah!  Life is short

So it’s off to craigslist.com

Hoping that any day now

I’ll be looking in the mirror

And seeing not an ol’ silver-haired woman

But a rip-roaring Blues singer

Great writing, BTW, Kris Kristofferson

I could just hear me!

“Busted flat in Baton Rouge…”
