#14 TEMPERANCE

(written by a first generation American)

Yin and Yang
One wall falls
Another rises
Rise and fall
Of the Berlin Wall
Remember how we cheered
When it fell?
Seems capital “B” Balance
Demands another rise
But what goes up
Must come down
Right?
So like a child’s see-saw
Up
Down
Are walls still made of bricks?
Have governments perfected their tricks?
Down come the National Parks
It took eons for silt and
Saline oceans
To turn a forest
Into quartz crystal
And petrified wood
Now, no one protects it
Hours to dismantle
A crystal cabin
Take it home
Store the stones
In a collector’s walk-in safe
Make America ugly again
Shut out and starve
The working poor
I know
Who cares
The market is screaming
Stocks are over the top
Would be raw justice
If we could stack that money
Lean the piles against the wall
Both sides
Create great ladders
Or
We can always
Make America elitist again…

SCRABBLING UPWARD

Into every life

A little acid must fall

Alkaline isn’t homeostasis

Challenge grows the intellect

And what some have named the soul

Adam and Eve, for instance

Flat bored

Sure, some of it was hormonal

But living in a perfect place

Like Shangri-La

No decisions to make

(unless you are the servants)

Yang and Yin

And all those common antonyms

Gift of a feather on the grass

Crawling with fleas

Pick up a piece of polished glass

Tiny shard draws blood

In the glaring sun

Part of life

Striving to live in the center

Where we will be happy

Will we?

Living

So difficult

But oh the feeling

When we emerge victorious…

PSYCHONEUROIMMUNOLOGY

How’d we move from pole to pole

Ignoring the all-important balance

Shaman shaking feather-trimmed

Rattler’s tails

Singing up to the skies

Suddenly, like time-warping,

Doctors with prescription meds

Creating multiple walking deads

Where’s the balance?

I don’t really see auras

I see life force

And I see it in your eyes

You really don’t want to die

But you continue to commit suicide

By prescription drugs

Chemicals are not always the answer

To better living

Break it down

Use your intelligence

Trust in yourself

Doses are meant to be adjusted

Not necessarily by the medical gods

I know so well

How hard life is

How sweet the soma from

Little white pills

How banishing reality

By swallowing chemical cocktails

Brings us into the okay world

Especially when we are the working poor

Agoraphobically, we must go out the door

Please, don’t give in

Where’s the balance?

WE are the balance

What’s right for our bodies

Isn’t necessarily right for others

Please don’t die

Psychoneuroimmunology…

HARMONY

Cobwebs and ukuleles

Battling for dominance

On the wall

Feng shui

Wind-water

Confused

Brings boons

Shadows wishes

Why not use the broom

Wipe the webs away

But for many a day

Spider woman is me

Weaving the tales

For others

Impossible to chase her

Yin and yang

Musical euphoria

Cleansing the air

While dark woman

Sits at the loom

Spinning, shaping

Truly wishing for good

But there are unseen forces

Tearing the fabric of fairytales

Stretching the strings of sound

Best to accept the dark and light

Sun by day, moon by night

Not all fine, not all bad

But a sense of balance

Between happy and sad…

EQUILIBRIUM

Blood spattered on grass

Over-enthusiasm set off

Unknown chain of events

Minimize the destruction

Garner the spots

Contain them

Decide to be

A sheep or

A ram

Neither

Ram Red for reminder

Sheep Green for goal

Bloodstone captures the soul

Blends them

Either/or becomes both

Balance in an Aries birthstone
