You’ve dragged me into
A cave I fear
Yet the treasures I crave
Await me there

Always a mind-bender

To contemplate Joseph Campbell

And his Hero’s Journey

Cetus means whale

And once again I think how I am stuck

In the Belly of the whale

In a metaphorical

Campbell way

I suspect there are zero whales

Cruising thru the Gulf of Mexico

So my best view of a whale

Is in the night sky

Where Cetus patrols

The sea of the water constellations

Named by Ptolemy

But everyone knows

Aquarius is an Air sign

Despite being the Water Bearer

Important to know

If you’re into elemental characteristics

The Sun passed through the sky

During the Rainy Season

And that’s why that area

Resembles a watery place

But I never knew outer space

Had seasons

The Florida joke is

We have two:

Summer and Hot

Anyway, lately,

So much rain

That even the frogs are seeking shelter

In my cave of a trailer

Diphda is the Arabic word

For frog

Diphda is also a star

AKA Beta Ceti

Brightest in the Cetus constellation

I layer all this scientific

All this mythic

For your edification

But what is my point?

Well, who knows?

That’s why I’m squatting

In my cave

Hermit of the stars

In this time of prison bars

To stay safe from germs and

Worms of doubt

Trying to make sense

Out of events

And when I do

You’ll be the first to know

Hang in there with me…

Waving a burning bundle of sage

Sweetening the mysterious corners

Of a lonely room

(Like a priest swinging an incense censer)

Humming along with Indigenous drumming

Interspersed with Om Mani Padme Hum mantras

Blasting from the MP3 headphones

(Like a monk’s voice lifting up to the heavens in a Gregorian chant)

Sipping wine and delicately crunching crackers

At an evening art opening, smiling

As the mind screams, “Shut up! Shut up!

You’re superficial and snobby!”

(Like a penitent accepting the blood and the body)

Religious Rituals

Nature Rituals

Social Rituals

Keeping those invasive mind demons away

Trying to get through another day…

Was it Joe Campbell

Who said we need a

Or we’d go insane?

Think of all the

Modern myths in our lives

Resounding in songs

Gems like

“We could be married

And then we’d be happy”

Hey, thanks, Beach Boys

LOVE the lie

I wonder if John Lennon

Is rocking around paradise

“Imagine all the people

Living life in peace”

His desire didn’t save him

Oh, it’s easy to go on and on

Especially if you’ve

Grown up as a Baby Boomer

Thousands of lyrics

Weaving a mythology

As tightly macrame’d

As a 1970’s plant hanger

No less important

Than the Greek or Roman

Stories passed down

And you know what?

I wouldn’t have traded

Any of those words

And melodies

For anything else

Balms of timeless honey

Keeping the sanity

Along with Santa and the

Easter Bunny

So when The Beatles sing

“All you need is love”

I still believe…
