FOR THE TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE (AUGUST 21, 2017)

Week of dress rehearsals

On the cosmic stage

Meteors lighting up

Countless trails blazed

Planets whirling backwards

Magnetic storms arrive

Constellations stretch their legs

Stars come alive

Wandering down aisles of life

Seeking answers for my heart

Searching for the perfect soul

Existence needs a fresh start

Ah, the Moon, overshadowing the Sun

Interfering with the brightness of Earth

Astronomical reasons meaningless

When we question our lonely worth

Eclipses demand tribute

So we question all intentions

Who is real, who is true

Who is a self-invention

Wandering down aisles of life

Searching for my matching soul

Eclipses mean new beginnings

O, celestial bodies, make me whole…

ORPHEUS’ SECOND CHANCE

Sometimes the talent doesn’t appear

Until age sculpts away the ego and fear

Son of Apollo and Calliope reborn

Worked at his craft, no time to mourn

One full moon night he found the power

Melodic tones delicate as a flower

Again he would seduce Hades and Persephone

And finally rescue his love Eurydice

Down to the Stygian Realm he traveled

Passing Cerberus he swiftly paddled

And there with gray hair and hands gnarled with age

He sang and played his love and rage

Music often dissolves the iciest heart

Hades would no longer keep them apart

The lovers left, holding hands

This time no caveat while leaving the darklands

Surfacing in woods lit from the dawn

Two old souls embraced and would live on

Magical music the curtain call

Perhaps it is true that love conquers all

MYTHOS

Love, a legend like

Ponce de Leon’s

Fountain of Youth

Is it real?

If so, where is it?

Many claim to have found it

True love

Soul mate love

But they either

Refuse to share

The square where “X” is marked

Or they truly don’t know

How they stumbled upon it

Is it hidden in jungly vines?

Or among the towering pines?

Do gators protect it in prehistoric swamps?

Or does it snuggle under the coldest perma frost?

I drank out of a fountain a few times

But no, wrong one

Seems like there is some kind of karmic craziness

Knotting me to  “love” phantoms

No substance, as is needed, in life’s trek

Love, I guess, is truth for the fortunate few

But a legend for those of us

Who simply cannot decipher a map…

MY SOULMATE, THE PROTOZOA

** scroll down for Diana Ross & the Supremes video**

People are always

Eclecticizing

The soulmate concept

I.E., my soulmate

May be the homeless man

Wrapped in a blanket on the sidewalk

Drinking from a bagged bottle

Or a child

Or a wildly inappropriate person

(according to my standards)

Someone I wouldn’t be caught

Dead or alive with

Maybe not a person

Maybe a protozoa

This time around

So in order to ignore that fact

And continue to search

For the one true love

Of one’s life

We eclecticize the myth

My favorite is the Greek playwright

Aristophanes’ Cartwheel People

Zeus split us up and we spend

An entire lifetime looking for that

Other half, our exact duplicate

Physically, not soulfully

Not putting it down

Eclecticizing, taking from

Multi-myths, rationalizing reasons

Why they look and act the way they do

Is a very human need for me and you

And so the definition of eclecticizing

According to me

Is to invent reasons why

Only the perfect match

Qualifies as soulmate

Me?  Well, I’ve accepted the microscopic

Protozoa this lifetime

He (it?) really has intense karma

Some day, we’ll be together…
